Program Overview

Fade Forward Barbering Basics Youth Program is a hands-on, beginner-friendly training experience that introduces young people to the fundamentals of barbering while reinforcing professionalism, confidence, and personal responsibility. Participants learn how a barbershop operates, how to maintain safe and sanitary practices, and how to build foundational cutting and grooming skills through guided demonstrations and structured practice.

Core Learnings

1) Barbering Foundations & Shop Readiness

  • Barbershop culture, expectations, and professional conduct

  • Time management, communication, and client respect

2) Tools, Equipment & Sanitation

  • Clippers, trimmers, guards, shears, combs, brushes, capes

  • Workstation setup and tool care

  • Hygiene and disinfection routines to support safe services

3) Hair & Scalp Fundamentals

  • Hair types, textures, growth patterns, and common challenges

  • Product basics and when to use them

  • Intro to consultation: understanding a client’s request

4) Clipper Control & Technique

  • Proper grip, angles, pressure, and movement

  • Guard system basics and length control

  • Blending fundamentals and clean finishing

5) Beginner Cuts, Grooming & Detailing

  • Basic clipper cut structure

  • Intro tapers and beginner blending

  • Lineup/shape-up fundamentals (symmetry and precision)

  • Neck cleanup and presentation

6) Client Experience & Career Exposure

  • Service flow: greeting, consultation, execution, aftercare

  • Portfolio basics (photos, documenting progress)

  • Pathways forward: continued training, mentorship, and next steps

Learning Outcomes & Competency Development

By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate safe sanitation practices and explain why hygiene standards matter

  • Identify and properly use core barbering tools (clippers, guards, trimmers, combs, brushes)

  • Set up a workstation that supports safety, efficiency, and professionalism

  • Apply foundational clipper control (angles, pressure, movement) during practice

  • Complete beginner-level cutting and detailing steps with guided instruction

  • Communicate professionally using respectful greetings, active listening, and clear questions
